MONTREAL -- Bob Gainey is resigning as the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, according to media reports circulating from several Canadian media outlets.

The team has called a 4 p.m. ET news conference for what it calls "an important announcement regarding the Club's management." ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun confirmed that announcement is Gainey's resignation.

Pierre Gauthier will take over for Gainey. Gauthier is a former GM of the Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Ducks. He's been the Canadiens' assistant GM since 2006.

Montreal is sixth in the Eastern Conference, eight points out of fifth place, but only three points ahead of No. 8 Philadelphia.

Interesting. I wonder what our Habs' insiders think.

It would seem to me two trains of thought:

1) Gainey was done and did plan on passing the torsch at year's end....

2) Either Gainey wanted to make a move and was stopped, or Gainey was unwilling to move someone (ie: Carey Price or Tomas Plekanec)...

He certainly made the HABS better since 2003...Just not able to get to the next level....Poor drafts have always been a killer in Montreal..
